Snorkelling is one of our most favourite activities, and it was one of the first things we did when we began our around-the-world adventure on Koh Samui in March 2016. We were based in the Fisherman’s Village, Bo Phut, at the time, and we spent some time reading reviews and researching the multiple providers. We concluded that a company called Mr Man was the way to go – which in our experience definitely held true!
It’s a half day trip, which is what we were looking for, and it takes place around Koh Tan, which allegedly, is not as scenic as that around Koh Tao – but for us, all the right elements were there! Great underwater experience, a lot of fish, breath-taking views during the boat ride, great lunch at a very scenic spot on Koh Tan and good organisation.
We snorkelled at a couple of different spots with great visibility and a very lively underwater world. One of the features which really stood out about this experience, and which we hadn’t encountered previously, was the fact that Mr Man himself snorkels with the group and summons everyone when he sees something worth showing to us. We would hear “Helloooo! I show you…giant clam!”, and some frantic swimming and head clunking with fellow snorkelers later, we would see the giant clam, trying its best to clamp down on Mr Man’s outstretched finger. We also saw a few stingrays, and we found Nemo!
- The longtail boat departs from the southern part of the island, so the closer your hotel is to there, the better. Tuktuk rides don’t make for the softest awakening first thing in the morning. We were staying in the exact opposite geographical location on the island, from where the trip to the pier took around 45 minutes.
- We went for the morning version of the snorkelling trip. We were told that the water is clearer then, resulting in better underwater visibility.
- Apply plenty of sun screen on your back and bum.
